June 2026 9 Field Entries 5 Destinations Mapped

November 21, 2002 — 7:30PM EST
DTW → SFO

Today marks the beginnings of a very long journey.

Today is the DTW–SFO leg — the beginnings of my eventual destination of Kathmandu, Nepal!!

“Doors closed.”

As I sit here I fumble with my thoughts. My mind is a very strange clutter, empty at the same time. Work is not totally behind me yet — I have very little I can do from SF tomorrow other than make a few phone calls.

All day I have been distracted from preparing by being ill. It turns out my tonsil operation in 1993 didn’t get the full tonsil and — low and behold — it is yet again infected. Penicillin.

Thank God for Eric Straka who helped with the emergency Cipro + Vicodin + Ambien for my trip.

So I sit here and struggle. I can’t find the words, but I want to be able to convey my essence, I guess. The spiritual side of me that eagerly looks forward to the Buddhist temples and spirituality that has survived far longer than my Catholicism. My wanderlust. The quest to simply never stop learning how others approach the world, what others have to deal with that dwarfs my life’s concerns. Then of course there is the ever-present, not-so-distant knee injury. — [push back]

But mostly I’m starting to get excited. I am flying to the other side of the world.

Thu 11-21-02: 7:23 DTW → SFO (arrive 9:30)
Fri 11-22-02: 12:15 SFO → NRT
Sat 11-23-02: NRT → BKK (10:52PM)
Sun 11-24-02: 6:00AM BKK → KTM (12:42PM)

4 days!! Looking at over 26 hours of flying time.

OK… I’m going to read a bit. Ciao!
